AAU Concluded the workshop on “Curricular Design and Delivery”

Al Ain University concluded the workshop on “Curricular Design and Delivery”, which was launched in the Abu Dhabi campus, in conjunction with the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) and Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) international. The workshop was presented by Prof. Janet Engle –Executive Associate Dean and Head of the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy, and Prof. Joseph DiPiro –Dean, Professor at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy, which has been continued for two days.

The workshop was attended by Dr. Noor Aldeen Atatreh –AAU Chancellor, Prof. Mohammad Bani Yas –Director of the Higher Education Sector in the Abu Dhabi Education Council, Prof. Ghaleb El Refae –AAU President, Dr. Khairi Mustafa –Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Dr. Rula Darwish- Dean of the College of Pharmacy at the University of Jordan, Dr. Mohammed Rahal –Dean of the College of Pharmacy at the Lebanese International University, Mr. Mike Rouse, Director of the International Services in the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education International Services Program, in addition to more than 60 researchers and academics from 30 nationalities who were representing more than 22 colleges of Pharmacy from different universities and colleges from within and outside the state.

The workshop addressed various topics, most notably, on how to guide the teaching staff in the field of pharmacy, to develop and modernize the educational pharmacy curriculum through the use of the latest means of technology in education, in addition to attracting students to interact in the classroom, and the new models of teaching and learning, with plans to implement changes of the curriculum to meet the needs of local institutions affiliated to them.

Also, the workshop included meetings between the participants through group work to discuss the most important aspects and suggestions of the workshops that are to be approved for the final recommendations.

On this occasion, Dr. Noor Aldeen Atatreh -AAU Chancellor- stressed on the importance of this workshop, which will develop several aspects of the faculty of pharmacy colleges and all who are interested in teaching in pharmacy. So, the development of their abilities would advance the curricula in their institutions to make a balance between the theoretical and practical methods. Also, he wished that the workshop will provide the participants with impressive potential benefits with his recommendations towards the academic faculty and researchers in focusing on how the graduates would be able to work hard in the field of pharmacy through their useful teaching methods and to integrate between the theoretical and practical aspects.

For his part, Mr. Mike Rouse, Director of the International Services in the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education International Services Program, expressed his pleasure for the collaboration with Al Ain University and stressed on the importance of establishing a workshop that combines theoretical and practical sides, which would develop the faculty skills and will reflect positively on the students in order to raise the awareness of today’s graduates to the challenges of the labor market.

It is worth mentioning that the College of Pharmacy at Al Ain University is the only college on the level of the United Arab Emirates that has obtained the international certification of the ACPE after industrious efforts and hard work, taking into regards the application of the Discreet quality and teaching standards of the American Foundation.
