9th Annual Environmental Day Highlights Zero Waste as a Driver of Sustainability and Circular Economy

The College of Business at Al Ain Campus organized the “9th Annual Environmental Day 2026” under the theme “Zero Waste as a Practical Engine for Sustainability and Circular Economy: Insights from Sustainable Development Goal 12,” reaffirming its commitment to integrating sustainability into education and institutional practices.
The event was inaugurated by the University President, Prof. Ghaleb El Refae, in the presence of deans, faculty members, administrative staff, and students. In his remarks, he emphasized the importance of adopting practical solutions to reduce waste and advance sustainability. He also toured student-led sustainable SME projects that reflected innovative efforts to support the circular economy. Prof. Zafar Husain, Dean of the College of Business, highlighted the necessity of aligning academic curricula with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goals 8, 9, and 12, to prepare environmentally responsible future generations.
The program featured distinguished speakers from government and industry who addressed key issues related to waste management, the circular economy, and the role of artificial intelligence in accelerating sustainability transformation. Activities included a recycling workshop in which students repurposed obsolete furniture into functional products, as well as a plantation drive held on campus.
This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Campus program under the supervision of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi and reflects the institution’s continued progress in global sustainability rankings, reinforcing its commitment to environmental responsibility and community engagement. The event was organized by Prof. Mosab I. Tabash, Prof. Shorouq Eletter, and Dr. Tahira Yasmin, with the primary aim of raising awareness about waste management, promoting the circular economy, and advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
