AAU Pharmacy College at National Pharmacovigilance Conference

The College of Pharmacy at Al Ain University participated in the UAE Second National Pharmacovigilance Conference organized by the UAE Ministry of Health in collaboration with Drug Safety Research in the UK and “Les Laboratoires Servier”, held at JW Marriott Hotel, Dubai.
Dr. Khairi Mustafa, the Dean of the College of Pharmacy at AAU, pointed out that the Second National Pharmacovigilance Conference is one of the most important conferences in the region as it revolves around adverse drug reactions monitoring, cause, assessment, clinical diagnosis, and assessment of the risk-benefit profile of medicines. In addition, the workshops tackle issues related to establishing pharmacovigilance standards in the UAE and the international experience in this field.
Dr. Khairi underlined that taking part in such conferences is vital in order to identify the latest advances in the field of pharmacy as well as to meet professionals to exchange experience. A number of faculty members attended the conference where they participated in the workshops revolving around pharmacovigilance and drug-risk management.
It is noteworthy that the World Health Organization started its Program for International Drug Monitoring and Pharmacovigilance in 1968. At the end of 2010, 134 countries were part of the WHO PV Program, and the number is expected to reach 150 by the end of 2012.
In collaboration with several international drug regulatory authorities, WHO has set standards for drug regulatory systems and pharmacometrics. It has also been an advocate of taking measures to ensure the speedy relay of information across drug centers around the world.
