Al Ain Municipality and Al Ain University Mark World Diabetes Day

Al Ain, UAE, Nov. 19, 2011. Al Ain Municipality – City Center Sector and Al Ain University organized an event in celebration of the World Diabetes Day, at the Green Mubazzara in Al Ain.
The event’s activities included a medical lecture followed by discussion and a QA session on Diabetes and the risks associated with it. The lecture, which addressed sound health and diet practices surrounding Diabetes, also stressed the importance of exercise while highlighting the psychological aspects to be taken into account of patients with diabetes. Moreover, the audience received advice on medication, blood sugar monitoring program, and insulin treatment.
Mrs. Khawla Al Qaisi, Chair of the Community Service Committee at the College of Pharmacy, gave a lecture entitled (Diabetes and Its Effects) in which she noted that AAU’s mission comes in line with that of the World Diabetes Day. This is apparent through the encouragement to implement the treatment and prevention strategies against Diabetes; hence comes the call to early detection of the disease.
Further to that, Dr. Ibtehal Abu Rezq, Dean of Student Affairs, underlined the importance of involving students in societal events and giving them the opportunity to engage in community service to identify the community’s needs and how to better serve it in tandem with the AAU’s mission.
Nurses specialized in Diabetes were also present to offer advice on monitoring the disease and prevention methods. Posters put up all around the early detection field clinics explained the symptoms and signs of Diabetes, and the individuals susceptible to it. The audience interacted positively with the clinics enhancing the spirit of cooperation between the health organizations and the public.
AAU students had also designed and produced awareness brochures which were distributed as part of the event.
At the end of the event, Mr. Sa’eed Al Hmeiri, the Coordinator of Community Events at Al Ain Municipality – City Center Sector honored AAU in gratitude for the great effort exerted in making the event a success.
