Biography

Professor Eid Abo Hamza holds a PhD in Counselor Education, which is CACREP accredited, from the University of Arkansas. He is a member of the American Association for Psychological Counseling and has received numerous scholarships and missions, including the Ford Foundation, OSF, and Fulbright Scholars at the University of South Florida. Dr. Abo Hamza has authored and translated five books and seven book chapters with Elsevier and published over 50 research papers in various international journals. His research interests include psychotherapy, addiction, family dynamics, and clinical disorders such as depression, schizophrenia, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Dr. Abo Hamza has received research grants from the Qatar Scientific Research Fund, such as UREP, OSRA, and Ajman University. He currently works as a professor at both Al Ain University in UAE and Tanta University in Egypt, where his extensive experience and expertise in counseling psychology have made significant contributions to the field of mental health. His research has helped improve our understanding of various clinical disorders and psychotherapeutic approaches, benefiting the lives of individuals and families affected by these issues.

Research Interests

Dr. Eid Abo Hamza's research interests are focused on prognosis, diagnosis, assessment, treatment, and other factors related to individuals with various forms of mental health issues. He has a unique approach to incorporating cross-cultural aspects in his research work, specifically in the younger populations and students.

His research on adolescent substance abuse and its impact on family quality of life, as well as his work on the association between internet gaming disorder and sensation seeking among Arab adolescents, are particularly relevant in today's society. These topics highlight the importance of understanding the psychological and social factors that contribute to various forms of addiction and the impact they can have on individuals and their families.

 Dr. Abo Hamza's systematic review of the psychosocial correlates of academic performance also highlights the importance of addressing the broader social and environmental factors that can impact academic success. This type of research can inform the development of interventions and policies aimed at improving academic outcomes and reducing disparities in education. Overall, Dr. Abo Hamza's publications demonstrate his commitment to advancing our understanding of mental health issues and improving the well-being of individuals and communities.

Some of his future research projects include exploring Psychometric Properties and Cross-Cultural Comparison of the Arabic Version of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Exploring Students’ Self-Identity in the Context of Cultural Diversity at Al Ain University, investigating the efficacy of various psychedelic drugs for substance misuse, Peer Influence and Adolescent Substance Use, and studying Belief in mental health myths amongst MBBS students at UAE.

Dr. Abo Hamza has recently submitted a few research papers, including one on the psychometric properties and cross-cultural comparison of the Arabic version of the Child Behavior Checklist, Youth Self Report, and Teacher's Report Form, exploring students' self-identity in the context of cultural diversity at Al Ain University, and peer influence and adolescent substance use. He also has a few articles that are in press, including one on the relationship between mindfulness and readiness to change in alcohol drinkers and exploring if psychology students believe mental health myths more than medical students.

 Dr. Abo Hamza has published numerous book chapters and articles in reputable journals. His research covers a wide range of topics, including clinical interview, motivational interview, substance abuse, mental health, and psychosocial correlates of academic performance. Some of the journals in which his work has been published include Current Psychology, Behavioural Brain Research, Frontiers in Psychiatry, and Frontiers in Psychology, The Family Journal: Counseling and Therapy for Couples and Families, Depression Research and Treatment, and Reviews in the Neurosciences among others.

Dr. Abo Hamza's publications have also focused on specific clinical aspects such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, addiction, and depression. For instance, he has co-authored articles on the psychosocial predictors of bipolar disorder and on the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy for depression. In addition, he has conducted research on the association between internet gaming disorder and sensation seeking among Arab adolescents.

Dr. Abo Hamza's work has made significant contributions to the field of psychology, particularly in the areas of clinical psychology, addiction, and mental health. His publications provide valuable insights into the psychological factors that influence behavior, and his systematic reviews provide a comprehensive overview of the existing literature on a particular topic. Overall, Dr. Abo Hamza's extensive research output demonstrates his commitment to advancing our understanding of psychological processes and improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental health issues.

    Teach Master and PhD students courses in both Autism and Intellectual disabilities and gifted and talented programs. These courses including diagnosis and evaluation of intellectual disabilities and Autism, assessments and testing, educational statistical, research methodology, and twice exceptional. Supervising master and PhD students in both gifted and talented, and intellectual disabilities programs. Serve on various departmental committees such as accreditation committee, research committee, committee of supporting and following up the funded research… etc. Furthermore, I am one of the committee members who charge on the process to receive CAEP accreditation.
  • Assistant Professor of Counseling Psychology, Department of Social Sciences, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Qatar University, 2016 – 2021
    Teach courses in the program, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Helping Skills, Counseling over Life Span, Family Relations, Abnormal Psychology, Clinical Interventions, Health Psychology, Emotions and Motivation, and Psychology of Personality. Collaborate with colleagues in administering the program, one of a very few in the Middle East. Led in the creation of the new master’s degree programs in Psychology.
